The new Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge were just released in Canada on March 11 but only offered up in Black and Silver for the Galaxy S7 and only Black for the Galaxy S7 Edge. It seems that both models will be coming to Canada in the very popular Gold Platinum by the end of March. According to our sources, the day to circle your calendar is March 28 for the Gold Platinum models to arrive, although they also heard there is a “global shortage” of the Galaxy S7 Edge. We have heard no word yet from the carriers, but if all else fails, you can always pick up either model in the Samsung Experience Store locations.
The new Galaxy S7 is very similar to last year’s dramatic makeover of the Galaxy S6 – the same sculptured metal and glass. If you just took a quick glance them side-by-side you may not notice that Samsung took a good thing and made a few subtle design changes to make it that much better. The Galaxy S7 has some new curves on the front and back that Samsung borrowed from the Galaxy Note 5. They not only help distinguish the Galaxy S7 from other Android devices but in a practical sense, it makes it much easier to pick up the Galaxy S7 off a flat surface. It also allowed Samsung to make the bezel even smaller – something we all like to see. The Galaxy S7 at 5.1-inches is for those that like a smartphone they can operate with one hand. While the Galaxy S7 Edge jumps the size up to 5.5-inches and adds the dual-curved display edges – giving Samsung a device between the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note series, which appears to be staying at 5.7-inches.
Most of the improvements are ‘under-the-hood’ – they updated processor to either Samsung’s homegrown Exynos 8890 octa-core or the new Snapdragon 820 quad-core and either one is much more powerful than last year’s Galaxy S6 series. The RAM was updated to 4GB and Samsung added back the expandable internal memory up to 200GB via a microSD card. The batteries remain non-removable, but they were increased in size – the Galaxy S7 jumped to 3000mAh and the S7 Edge is a large 3600mAh – they retain the rapid charge feature and added quick wireless charging introduced with the Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. Samsung also added the ‘always on’ feature to their display to save battery life when you check your notifications or the time and date. Samsung also reworked the camera area with dual-pixel technology on a 12MP sensor for better low light pictures and from the photos we are seeing on the internet, it appears to be a success. Samsung also added IP68 certification for dust and water resistance.
