It was just last month that Samsung Electronics had introduced its latest flagship smartphones – the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge – at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain. Both the handsets have since received a decent reception from the tech media as well as from consumers, meaning Samsung is selling truckloads of them everywhere. Consumer Report has recently even anointed the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge as the best smartphones ever built. However, even as the Galaxy S7 duo have barely started hitting store shelves around the world, Samsung is apparently already planning to launch yet another smartphone, which can very well be a variant of the Galaxy S7, knowing Samsung’s penchant for launching innumerable models of every successful device it launches in the market.
According to a recent listing on an Indian website that tracks imports into and exports out of the country, a new device with model number SM-G891A was imported into the country on the 16th of this month, apparently for testing purposes. While the listing doesn’t give away much, it does seem to suggest that the device comes with a 5.1-inch display and has a price-tag of Rs. 24,038 ($360). While the pricing seems way too low for a premium handset, it’s just the import price that will increase substantially at the retail level thanks to taxes and markups by distributors and retailers. Either way, that last letter in the model name may seem like a hint that the phone imported into India is an AT&T model of the upcoming handset, but why Samsung would test a device meant for a US carrier in India is certainly something to ponder over.
While there’s nothing more that we get to know from the Zauba listing, tech journalist and prolific tipster, Mr. Evan Blass, has suggested on Twitter that the device may very well be the Galaxy S7 Active, seeing as the Galaxy S6 Active comes with the model number SM-G890A. While all these suggestions are still in the realms of speculation, it will indeed be interesting to see what Samsung actually has in store. More will surely be revealed about the mysterious SM-G891A in the days to come, and as we get more info, we’ll make sure to pass them on.
