Oculus Rift Update Lets You Install Games On Any Drive

It’s been over three weeks since the Oculus Rift began shipping to customers, but while the headset already made its public release, the platform is not without its shortcomings. The Oculus Rift is one of the first virtual reality headsets after all, and the user experience will continue to improve with time. Nevertheless, one of the biggest complaints from early Oculus Rift adopters has been the fact that the system doesn’t allow the installation of games on drives other than the default one. Evidently, this can be a real issue for PC users whose “C:” or main / default drive doesn’t have a large enough capacity, but the good news is that the problem has now been dealt with. A new firmware update for the Oculus Rift has been released, allowing users to install their virtual reality games on a different drive.

Since its release the Oculus Rift has been criticized by consumers for the fact that the platform did not allow users to install their games in a custom location on their hard drive(s). Instead, all titles had to be installed on the same drive where Windows OS is located, and more often than not PC users keep their operating systems on a smaller, snappier SSD. This became a real issue, as some customers were unable to experience certain Oculus Rift games due to lack of storage, despite the fact that they may have had tens of GB of storage at their disposal on a secondary drive or partition. Fortunately, this issue has now been solved through a firmware update, which allows Oculus Rift users to install games on drives other than the one accommodating Windows OS.

However, although new Oculus Rift owners will be able to connect their headsets to their computers and begin installing games on whatever drive they want, existing Oculus Rift customers will be required to back up existing data, uninstall the Oculus Rift software, install the latest Oculus application, and then restore the backup. This is somewhat of a lengthy process with numerous steps, but it is not a difficult one per se, as long as users follow the instructions provided by Oculus (source link below) or the steps detailed in the following video, which are virtually the same (video courtesy of Jeffrey Grubb – YouTube).
