Sony’s Xperia Z line has been the pinnacle of their handset lineup for years, only to essentially be replaced by the Xperia X series that was officially announced and put on display back during Mobile World Congress at the end of February. While Sony does have a low-end, mid-range, and basically a high-end device in the lineup with the Xperia Xa, the Xperia X, and the Xperia X Performance, a new rumor suggests that Sony is looking to launch a new device called the Xperia X Premium to be the replacement for the Xperia Z5 Premium that was launched last year.
With the Xperia Z5 Premium, Sony manufactured a device which did something that no other manufacturer was doing. They integrated a 4K display into the phone, the catch was that it would only run at 4K resolution when 4K content was playing on the screen, and revert back to Full HD when all other content was in use. The Xperia X Premium would reportedly take things to the next level as the rumor suggests that it would feature a screen with high dynamic range support, which would be another first in the smartphone market. If that were actually the case, there is also still a good chance that it would only work in HDR mode when there was HDR content playing, like the new HDR content on Netflix or example.
This is likely to be how the things work as the rumor states that the display would still be a Full HD screen, but it would support HDR playback which means that it would handle HDR content the same way the Xperia Z5 Premium handles 4K content. The display on the device would also be 5.5-inches in size which is the same size screen found on the Xperia Z5 Premium, making the Xperia X premium sound more and more like a successor. The display is also said to have the ability to go up to a maximum brightness of 1300 nits, compared to the max on the Galaxy S7 which is 855. The Xperia X Premium is also rumored to come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and Adreno 530 GPU, with 3GB of RAM and finally coming with USB Type-C support instead of the micro USB that’s been used on past models.
