Just over a year ago Google introduced a new Google Contacts preview. One which was designed to be a visual departure from the old and one which also looked to bring together a more cohesive way to engage and manage your contact lists. The new design included the ability to automatically have your contact lists updated, see emails and meetings listed along with the person’s contact details and an improved and easier way to deal with duplicate contacts. Fast forward a year and the Google Contacts preview has gone through a number of updates with one of the most recent bringing with it the ability for administrators to deploy Google Contacts to its users. Now, the web app is getting another update and one which adds a feature which Google states has been widely requested by users and for good reason.
The new feature is a simple and yet will be one which is extremely useful. Now, Google Apps users have the ability to import contacts from third-party mail clients. The compatible list is extensive, although to cut to the chase it does include support for most of the frequently used clients like Yahoo Mail, Outlook, AOL, Apple, among others. In terms of the recently announced Admin support, administrations will have to turn on the feature before users will be able to make use of it.
While from the user end, the implementation of the new third-party support is one which is rather typical of contact importing. In the blog announcement on the matter, Google notes users can simply head to their Google Contacts on a computer, click on “More”, followed by “Import”. At which point they will be provided with a list of third-party options to choose from. Once one is selected, the user will have to sign in to email provider and this will be followed by the automatic transferring of contacts. Again, according to the blog posting, this is a feature which is rolling out now and is expected to see the completion of the roll out within the next three days.
