Techies always love a secret, and it looks like there is a secret feature on offer with the new Moto G4 Plus, which was announced just days ago. The feature is what seems to be a small, hidden LED light just to the right of the home button. If you watch the video below, you can see that it lights up when a microUSB cable is plugged in, but that seems to be about all it is used for at the moment. No hint of the LED light was mentioned at any of the news conferences, so for now, it remains a mystery as to what its purpose is. Although, the Moto G4 Plus is not the first Moto smartphone to have an ‘unofficial’ LED light – the 3rd-generation Moto G and the Motorola Nexus 6 also had one too.
The Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus look identical on the outside and both sport a fingerprint sensor below the display, which the company claims is small, but fast. Both devices use the same 5.5-inch FHD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and about 401 pixels-per-inch. The Moto G4 Plus is running a Qualcomm MSM8952 Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor with a quad-core clocked at 1.2 GHz and a quad-core clocked at 1.5 GHz, while it uses an Adreno 405 GPU processor for its graphics. The G4 Plus comes in a 2GB/16GB model as well as a 3GB/32GB variant – however, both offer external expansion via a microSD card up to 128GB.
It sports a 16MP primary camera with an aperture of f/2.0, phase detection and laser autofocus, and dual-tone LED flash. The front-facing camera (FFC) is a 5-megapixel snapper with an aperture of f/2.2, auto HDR, and a wide-angle for selfies and video chatting. It has a 3,000 mAh non-removable battery with Turbo Charge. It has the usual suspects including WiFi, Bluetooth v4.1, GPS, an FM radio and a microUSB v2.0 port for charging and data transfer. It is worth noting that NFC does not appear to be part of the package – a shame considering it does have the fingerprint sensor. It will be running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, and you’ll find some Moto apps installed on top of Google’s OS. It measures 153 x 76.6 x 9.8 mm, weighs in at 155 grams, and comes in our favorite colors of Black and White. The Moto G4 Plus is available now in India, and the G4 will soon follow. They will then go to the UK in June and then expand to other areas in due course. It is a lot of phone for a little over $200.
