With the OnePlus 3 announcement event this week, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see developers and consumers alike getting hyped about the phone. While sales of the device did go live the day of the event, the phones have yet to reach the doorstep of most who have made the purchase, but thanks to developer Grarak over on the OnePlus forums, there is already an unofficial build of CyanogenMod 13 for the OnePlus 3 if you’re someone who is inclined to flash custom firmware to your devices. OnePlus intentionally designed the phone to allow tinkering, and those who love to tinker will be excited to know that a custom ROM will be available for the OnePlus 3 once they receive their units.
In addition to the unofficial ROM build, a custom recovery for the device is available as well, and for those who are unaware or may be new to flashing custom firmware, the recovery will be needed before the ROM can be flashed to the phone, as will the unlocked bootloader, and the correct Gapps package if you want to enable things like the Play Store and other Google services on the device. If you’ve purchased the OnePlus 3 and are simply awaiting its arrival, and if you’re interested in flashing CyanogenMod 13 to the phone, there is a handy set of installation instructions over at the OnePlus forums which details things step by step.
This should go without saying, but steps should be followed to the letter if you want to ensure the best possible chance that nothing goes wrong during the process. Having said that, the installation instructions are accompanied by every single download you’ll need to finish things off as well, so it seems everything is provided in one thread. CyanogenMod 13 is based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, so you’ll be on the same Android version as those with a stock OnePlus 3. If you’re planning on flashing the ROM, it’s worth mentioning that there are a few things which are unstable at the moment and may be broken, such as there being no F2FS, and the ROM causes a decline in battery life as well as performance issues with the camera.
