Earlier today OnePlus took the wraps off their latest flagship offering, the OnePlus 3. This is a unit which comes boasting a number of high-profile specs, with the main headline ones being a whopping 6GB RAM and the latest Qualcomm flagship processor, the Snapdragon 820. However, from the OnePlus consumer perspective, two very notable features which are not exactly ‘new’ by industry terms are the inclusion of NFC and fast charging capabilities. The first, NFC, made its comeback after being left out of the OnePlus 2, to the dismay of many. Likewise, in spite of much of the market turning to quicker charging features last year, the OnePlus 2 did not come boasting faster charging. As a result, both NFC and faster charging will be welcomed features, albeit not exactly market-leading features.
However, while the OnePlus 3 comes with what OnePlus refer to as ‘Dash Charge’, the actual capacity of the OnePlus 3 battery has decreased from the OnePlus 2’s 3,300 mAh down to only 3,000 mAh. A decrease which has not gone unnoticed by potential OnePlus 3 customers and an aspect which was raised with the company during an AMA OnePlus has been holding today on Reddit.
In answering why the OnePlus 3 only comes equipped with a 3,000 mAh battery, the OnePlus team explains “when we think about Never Settle it’s not about having the “biggest” everything.” Pointing to the fact that the actual capacity is not the end goal. Adding that they were looking to strike a balance between numerous aspects including battery life, performance and so on. The team go on to explain that the actual 3,000 mAh included on the OnePlus 3 will likely “last longer than you think” due to the level of efficiency claimed to be on offer with the device. While also drawing on the use of Dash Charge to explain that the lesser-capacity battery is quicker at charging than the OnePlus 2. In fact, this was specifically a comment that Carl Pei also noting on, during the same conversation. Explaining that users should check out Dash Charge before really deciding that 3,000 mAh is not enough. With Pei also suggesting that they believe Dash Charge will change “user behavior from charging at night to charging whenever there’s a need.” Those interested can read the full 3,000 mAh conversation by heading through the link below.
