AMOLED displays have been all the rage lately, many smartphone manufacturers have started using OLED displays, including OnePlus, Meizu, and a number more, and it seems like more of them are waiting in line to do it as well. As Samsung is preparing to push AMOLED screen to laptops, it seems like LG might be aiming to push their OLED displays to smartphones and other small gadgets, at least according to a recent report, read on.
LG still hasn’t properly released their OLED displays to smartphones, though their LG G Flex and G Flex 2 handsets did sport curved P-OLED displays, but that was more of a test than anything else. It seems like LG is ready to switch from IPS LCD panels to OLED displays in the future, and also provide their OLED displays to other manufacturers as well. According to a report from Korea, LG will supply AMOLED screens to both Huawei and Xiaomi moving forward. Both Huawei and Xiaomi are still relying on the LCD technology, even though Huawei’s Nexus 6P phablet ships with a QHD AMOLED panel, but that device was made for Google, so that is not all that surprising. Anyhow, Huawei and Xiaomi are currently the two largest smartphone manufacturers in China, while Huawei is also the third-largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. Having this in mind, LG will have to supply quite a few OLED displays in order to meet the demand, Huawei has sold over 100 million smartphones in 2015, while Xiaomi managed to ship around 70 million.
We still don’t know how accurate is this report, nor do we know if these two companies intend on switching to OLED completely, or not, though it’s likely they’ll use such displays for a couple of devices only, at least in the beginning. This is not the first time we’ve seen such rumors though, so… perhaps there’s something to it. In addition to all this, the source claims that LG will provide a curved display to Xiaomi, something similar to the ‘Edge’ display we’ve seen on Samsung’s Galaxy S Edge devices, and the Vivo XPlay 5. That is more or less it, we’ll report back as soon as more info comes to the surface, so stay tuned for that.
