LG is one of the largest tech companies in the world, and they are a huge contributor to the smartphone arena. This year their flagship the LG G5 did not make the splash they were hoping for, but a successor to the LG V10 is on the horizon. One area that LG has tried to make inroads is in the phablet area – complete with a stylus, but the Samsung Galaxy Note series seems to have a real lock on that market segment. Not to be discouraged, back in February, LG unveiled their new mid-range LG Stylo 2 phablet to replace last year’s LG Stylo. Then in May, LG announced a more powerful variant, the LG Stylo 2 Plus.
The LG Stylo 2 Plus is now available in Canada at both Rodgers and Fido for an outright price of $350. On Fido’s website, you can get the device for as little as $0 on a two-year agreement on a Plus 15 plan. Other options allow you to purchase it for $125 with a two-year agreement on a Plus 10 plan. The $350 cost comes in on either Prepaid service or outright on a month-to-month plan. It is indicated as a Fido Fave – a designation given to certain devices that are covered by a two-year manufacturer’s warranty. Rogers is offering the new device for $0 down on their Smart and Premium Plans.
The Stylo 2 Plus sports a 5.7-inch IPS LCD Full HD display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels and a respectable 386 pixels-per-inch (PPI). LG went back to Qualcomm and grabbed a Snapdragon 430 (MSM8937) octa-core processor (two quad-core’s clocked at 1.2GHz and 1.4GHz), with an Adreno 505 GPU to handle the graphics. The Canadian version will pack 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage via a micro SD card up to 256GB. It will have a 13MP primary camera with autofocus and LED flash. For selfies and video chatting it will use a 5MP front-facing camera with a LED flash. A removable 3000mAh battery provides the power. It comes with a fingerprint sensor for unlocking the camera and authorizing mobile payments.
Besides the usual suspects – WiFi, Bluetooth v4.1, GPS, NFC, an FM radio, and a microUSB v2.0 port for charging and data transfer – the LG Stylo 2 Plus does have a stylus for writing on the display. The Stylo 2 Plus will be running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box, measuring 155 x 79.6 x 74mm, and weighs in at 145 grams.
