Those that are serious about photography, like to us the grid on the viewfinder of whatever camera they are using. Typically the grid is 3×3, following the two-thirds rule of thumb for taking pictures. The Google Camera has had this option for quite some time. Allowing people to choose to either have the grid on or off, but that was it. It not appears that the new Google Camera which will likely ship with Android 7.0 Nougat, will come with a few more grid options.
According to Android Police, who have screenshots showing these changes, there will be the grid off option, 3×3, 4×4, the Golden Ratio, and square. Now the square one is going to be a popular one, as it’s a 1:1 ratio, and that’s the size that Instagram uses for pictures – even though you can now (mostly) use pictures of any size, on Instagram. Additionally, in this update to the Google Camera, the grid option actually sits with the flash, timer and HDR settings on the interface of the camera. Making it easy for the photographer to go ahead and toggle the grid on or off as they like. Otherwise, there doesn’t seem to be many changes to the UI of this update to the Google Camera. It’s likely that there are plenty of under-the-hood changes here though.
Earlier today, it was reported that Android 7.0 Nougat would be seeing an August release, which isn’t a huge surprise given that it lines up with the release of the developer previews for Nougat so far. It was also reported that the Nexus 5 wouldn’t be seeing Android 7.0 Nougat. Again, not a big surprise since the Nexus 5 wasn’t getting the developer previews. Now this new Google Camera update isn’t confirmed to be shipping with Android 7.0 Nougat when that is sent over-the-air to many Nexus devices next month, but it is pretty likely. This may not even be the final build of the Google Camera app that will be in Android 7.0 Nougat, hopefully Google can bring in some more features to make their camera app a bit more robust, as many still think it’s rather plain.
