In recent years, LG has gained popularity in the smartphone market with many of their devices. LG devices typically come with interesting innovations and provide power and sometimes a lower cost than some of the other premium Android smartphones. Unfortunately, the LG G5, the company’s first modular phone, has not done as well as expected, perhaps because customers are not yet ready to embrace the concept of modularity in mobile devices. But last year’s LG V10 did quite well, and its successor may be on the way soon.
According to ETNews, LG is expected to unveil the successor to the LG V10 this September. It is assumed to be named the LG V20, though that may not actually be the final name of the device. This would come a month earlier than last year’s V10. While the specs remain unknown, last year’s device should provide a good idea of LG’s starting point in terms of physical design, and it’s probably safe to assume at least a few of the hardware components will receive upgrades. The LG V10 sports a 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 IPS display, a 16-megapixel rear camera with OIS, 4 GB of RAM, Snapdragon 808 processor, and a 3000 mAh battery. The body of the device is shock resistant, and has a stylish look to it, with a stainless steel frame and a back cover made of Dura Skin – a special plastic that is soft yet highly durable. The volume and power buttons are located on the back rather than the sides, keeping the edges flat. One of the most interesting things about this device is the display. Above the notification bar is a slim secondary display that stays on all the time, and provides quick shortcuts to various functions of the phone without the need to turn the main display on first. It also provides information at a glance, such as the time and date. The V20 will likely include a similar feature, as it is the signature feature of the V10, but it will be interesting to see how the new device builds off of and improves on this functionality.
Not much is known about the V20 at this point; no official pricing or release dates have been announced. Fortunately, if rumors prove to be correct, the wait is getting less and LG will make their announcement within the next couple of months.
