Samsung took the veil off its new Gear IconX activity tracking earbuds last month, and earlier today the company announced that the product is now available for purchase in select markets around the world, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Russia, the UK, and South Korea. For prospective customers who may not reside in one of these select countries, Samsung Electronics confirms that the Gear IconX will gradually expand its reaches “around the rest of the globe”.
Readers who may have missed the initial official announcement may be wondering what the Samsung Gear IconX is about. On short, the Gear IconX is a pair of in-ear, stand-alone wireless headphones with enough internal memory to store up to 1,000 MP3 audio files. In addition, the Samsung Gear IconX is equipped with an in-ear heart rate monitor that can track the wearer’s fitness habits, distances traveled, speeds, and durations. Of course, the sensor will also track the wearer’s heart rate and the number of calories burned, and the data can be easily synced with Samsung’s S Health application. There are other technical aspects that make the Samsung Gear IconX an interesting product, including touch controls for music playback, and the fact that the earbuds turn on automatically whenever they are placed in the user’s ears. As expected from a wireless product, the Samsung Gear IconX is powered by a battery; or to be precise, each earbud draws energy from an incorporated 47 mAh battery rated at roughly 3.6 hours of usage. It’s also worth noting that, although this is a Samsung product able to sync with S Health, it is compatible with virtually any Android device as long as it has 1.5 GB of RAM or more, Bluetooth 4.1 support, and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or higher.
The Samsung Gear IconX package includes the earbuds themselves, a couple of additional ear tip sets in different sizes, a charging cable, and a charging case that incorporates its own 315 mAh battery, providing up to two additional charges for the earbuds. The product is available for purchase in three different colors, namely black, blue, and white, and in South Korea, it is priced at 220,000 Won, which translates to roughly $193 at today’s conversion rate. However, the prices will more or less differ according to each region.
