AT IFA in Berlin today, Samsung showed off its new Gear S3 smartwatch, dubbed the classic watch turned smarter. There are two variations of the watch and the first is the Gear S3 Classic which looks more like a conventional wrist watch that you would wear to a formal party. The second is the Gear S3 Frontier which is a more rugged looking watch in the chronograph style image. Either version is a step up from last year’s Gear S2 with improvements inside and out. There are many videos out there showing off the new Gear S3, but this is considered the ‘Samsung Gear S3: Official Launch Film” and you can see it below.
The Samsung Gear S3 is more than a pretty face – it is a stand-alone GPS, Altimeter, and Barometer. If you are climbing a mountain and need to check how high you climbed for the day – you got a running graph for the past six hours to show your height above sea level. It has a built-in speaker so you can send and receive calls directly on the Gear S3 without resorting to your smartphone. The Gear S3 is also water-resistant for those that enjoy kayaking and water sports. Samsung wants us to know that their new Gear S3 is “Timeless outside. Revolutionary inside.”
Samsung packed in an always-on 1.3-inch Super AMOLED display that is covered with a face designed specifically for smartwatches – Corning’s Gorilla Glass SR+. It has a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels and 278 pixels-per-inch (PPI.) The brains come from a dual-core processor clocked at 1.0 GHz and 768MB of RAM. It is packing 4GB of internal memory and many different sensors, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS, NFC, and Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST), allowing Samsung Pay to make mobile payments directly from the Gear S3. You also get the heart rate sensor, an ambient light sensor, and a Gyroscope.
The main differences internally of the two devices is that the Gear S3 Frontier will feature 3G and 4G LTE capabilities, whereas the Gear S3 Classic will offer Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity only. They both will have a much larger 380 mAh battery than before and one which Samsung claims will allow the Gear S3 to last 3-4 days in between charges. Although Samsung does provide a wireless charging pad with the smartwatch, for when the smartwatch does need to be charged.
