Leak: Verizon To Launch DROID Edition Of Moto Z Play

A new leak suggests that Verizon together with Lenovo will be launching a DROID Edition of the upcoming Moto Z Play. While the Moto Z Play was initially thought to be an international device only, as there was no confirmation from Lenovo that a U.S. model would be launched, leaked images have surfaced today which appear to show off a Moto Z Play DROID model that not only features a boot up screen emblazoned with the Verizon and DROID logos, but also a settings screen with the about phone section that lists the device as the Moto Z Play DROID.

From the settings screen there are a handful of other telling details, like the version of Android software that will be running on the device, listed as Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, as well as plenty of hardware information like the amount of RAM, internal storage, display resolution, camera sensor quality and more. Based on the photos, the Moto Z Play DROID will feature a Full HD screen, and since this is just a Verizon model of the Moto Z Play the screen size would be the same as the original model, which is said to be 5.5-inches. The RAM is listed as 3GB while the internal storage is set at 16GB. While the amount of RAM matches up with the details in a leaked benchmark from earlier this week, the internal memory is less than expected if these details from today are to be believed, as the benchmark listed off the Moto Z Play having 32GB of storage space.

Aside from the internal storage, other specs like the cameras match up with the benchmark leak, and it looks like the Moto Z Play DROID (as well as the Moto Z Play) will feature a 16MP camera on the back, while a 5MP camera is integrated up front for selfies and video chat. The model in these images is also sporting the July security patch, although it’s entirely possible that once the Moto Z Play DROID launches a more recent security patch could be applied or be on the way soon after. Aside from the above details, what’s still missing is the battery capacity as well as the exact processor to be used, although it’s possible that all variants of the Moto Z Play could be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 CPU which is the current speculation. Today’s leaked images also follow leaked images alleged to be of the regular Moto Z Play, shown off in white, which popped up back on August 18th.
