After LG announced that they were doing a limited preview of the update to Android 7.0 Nougat for LG G5’s in South Korea, now Canadian wireless carrier, TELUS is stating that the rollout is happening as soon as August 22nd. Making it pretty likely that is when the new version of Android will become official and become stable. Currently, TELUS is only showing the Android N update for the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X, which were the two Nexus smartphones released last year. It could be that those are the two getting it first, with older Nexus devices getting it a bit later on. Or they just haven’t added them to the list just yet.
Google has not yet confirmed when the next version of Android will be stable and the code will land on AOSP. However, they have always stated that it is coming in the third quarter. Which started on July 1st and runs through the end of September. So it could be literally, any day now. With two companies stating that they will be releasing Nougat on August 22nd, now, it seems almost confirmed that is the day in which the code will finally drop.
LG has also mentioned recently that the LG V20 which is being announced on September 6th in New York City, is going to be the first smartphone released running Android 7.0 Nougat. A bit of a surprising turn of events, seeing as Nexus devices are typically the first ones released with a new version of Android. Recent rumors have pegged the two HTC-made Nexus devices as coming out in October. While the LG V20 is coming in September. So it’s making for a pretty interesting Nexus season this year.
Android 7.0 Nougat has been available in alpha and beta form through developer previews since around March of this year. So developers have spent plenty of time with the new update to Android, and while many apps are still not compatible with it, many have already been updated for Nougat. The code drop will initially only be available for Nexus devices, but it looks as if LG might be one of the first to roll out updates to Android 7.0 Nougat.
