Many people consider Xiaomi to be a smartphone manufacturer, but the company likes to think they’re far more than that, and their products do reflect that. This company had released all sorts of various tech gadgets thus far, ranging from smartphones, tablets and fitness trackers, all the way to a smart rice cooker, smart bicycle and a smart light bulb. Xiaomi likes to do a little bit of everything, and it was just a matter of time before they introduce a VR headset. Xiaomi’s VR headset had leaked a couple of times in the last couple of days and rumors reported that the device might launch today. Well, the rumors have been spot on it seems considering the fact that Xiaomi just unveiled their very own VR headset, read on.
The company’s VR headset is called ‘Xiaomi Mi VR Play’, and it was announced in China today. Now, unlike other VR headsets, this device sports the so-called ‘zipper design’, which essentially means that a pouch is built-in here, in a way. Sounds odd? Well, it is, but it makes sense, in a way. The ‘zipper design’ is here to protect your device, and to give you the ability to tuck it away when you’re not using it, you just zip it up like a regular bag. Xiaomi has used Lycra fabric (nylon + spandex) and EVA around this device, which is not only lightweight but also skin-friendly, says the company. The Xiaomi VR Play headset can fit phones from 4.7 to 5.7-inches, which basically means that the Xiaomi Mi Max is not compatible with this handset.
Xiaomi has opted to include two anti-glare aspherical lenses here, which have a tolerance of just 0.01mm, and Xiaomi claims that they will provide great image clarity. The metal button is included on the top of this device, and the company has also created a standalone ‘VR App’ which will make it possible for you to get panoramic video, 3D movies, VR apps and games which are designed for this headset. The company will offer a number of color variants and designs for you to choose from, and it is also worth mentioning that the device measures 201 x 107 x 91mm, while it weighs 208.7 grams. Now, do keep in mind that this VR headset is still not available for purchase, the company is open for beta testers though, you can sign up here (Chinese consumers only) if you want. If you are selected, you’ll get this VR headset for just 1 Yuan, which is, needless to say, a bargain. Now, once the device becomes available, it will cost 49 Yuan ($7), which is also incredibly affordable, and will make it possible for a ton of people to (finally) get a VR headset.
