Verizon has started to push out software updates to multiple phones today, including the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, and both the Moto Z DROID Edition and the Moto Z Force DROID Edition. While these aren’t updates to Android 7.0 Nougat, they do include the September Security Patch which should really be just as important to users as it makes the devices more secure as they will be less at risk from malicious bugs. All of these software updates should be heading out to devices as over-the-air updates, but as always not everyone will see these updates immediately, and some users may even see them a little bit later this week as Verizon continues to roll them out across all of these phones.
While Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is receiving this update today, AT&T pushed their update with the September Security Patch out to the Galaxy Note 5 yesterday. In regards to the other three phones Verizon is updating, it doesn’t appear that there is any other changes besides the latest security bug fixes, then again it’s always possible that there are some general bug fixes and improvements that have been made which have been included in these updates as well, although the Verizon Wireless support page doesn’t state as much.
Verizon also doesn’t mention how big each update file will be, but they do recommend that customers connect up to a Wi-Fi network before starting the software download, so there’s a good chance that the update will be big enough that users won’t want to eat through their cell network data. The update for the Galaxy Note 5 on AT&T’s network that went out yesterday was around 430MB, although it did include some extra stuff so Verizon’s update files are likely to be significantly smaller as there’s no addition of things like Advanced Messaging support or support for Wi-Fi calling included here. If you have any of these devices on Verizon’s network, and you haven’t yet received a notification that the updates are available, then you can manually check for them by navigating to the settings menu on your device, scrolling to about phone, and then tapping on software updates.
