Security patches are a big part of the Android ecosystem these days thanks to Google committing to pushing monthly security patches out to Nexus devices, and although not all manufacturers and carriers follow the same timeline, it does mean that updates are coming out quicker than they used to, even if they do only end up including a few minor changes. In the case of Verizon Wireless, they’re now beginning to push out the software update to the Motorola DROID Turbo 2 which includes the latest security patch, which at this point in time is the one for September. In addition the new security patch being added in the update also adds another incremental change to the device.
The other notable tweak that DROID Turbo 2 users will want to pay attention to is the inclusion of Wi-Fi calling, as Verizon is now enabling it on the device with this update. While Verizon tends to have pretty excellent coverage in much of their network coverage area, they aren’t without a dead spot or two, and this is where the ability to make calls and send texts over a local Wi-Fi connection comes in handy. Now, DROID Turbo 2 owners will have this function at their fingertips.
In regards to the rest of the update, it would appear that these are the only two changes that were made so users shouldn’t be expecting anything monumental in terms of new features or design changes. Having said that, Wi-Fi calling could be monumental to some depending on how spotty their coverage may be in an area where they may typically have Wi-Fi. To get the use of Wi-Fi calling on the DROID Turbo 2, users will want to navigate to the settings menu and then go into the advanced calling sub menu, where they will need to first activate “advanced calling.” Following this step, HD Voice and Wi-Fi calling will be additional options in this menu that can be enabled as well. Verizon doesn’t mention how big the software update is going to be, but it’s not likely to be very large considering there are only two things included. That said, it’s still always a good idea to connect to Wi-Fi before starting the download, and it’s recommended to have at least 50 percent battery life.
