Google’s new Daydream VR system has been teased since Google I/O. Developers have gotten a crack at it, and compatibility with Unreal Engine 4 and Unity have set VR gamers salivating over the promise of what’s to come. After revealing the first Daydream headset, Google has made the VR system official, putting a page about it up on their website with details about the headset and a number of other things, not the least of which is the sizable stable of launch titles, which includes the sequel to the much-loved Gunjack game for Gear VR and a Harry Potter spinoff called ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them,’ each showing off the strengths of the platform and its unique controller in their own way.
The Daydream View headset, like the Cardboard headsets of old, is not a standalone device, and will need a compatible phone to work. The new Pixel devices fit the bill nicely. Other devices, as well as support for some existing devices, will come in the future. The platform requires, at a minimum, a good screen, a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, and a number of sensors that help the phone to know where your head is. Paired up with the requisite controller, the experience that Daydream buyers can expect should be nothing short of just as immersive as the likes of the HTC Vive and PlayStation VR.
As for things to do in VR, Daydream can not only give users a powerfully immersive theater mode for media like HBO and sporting events, but can also give users immersive tours of locations both real and fantastic, including the aforementioned ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.’ Daydream users can expect a number of great games to be available at launch, like Lego Brickheadz and Need For Speed. The usual suite of VR-augmented Google Apps is on board, such as a fully immersive trip into the annals of YouTube, or a walk around the block on the other side of the world courtesy of Google Maps. Users can check out their photos in a 360 degree view via Google Photos as well, or even kick back and watch the swath of content that Google Play Movies & TV has to offer in VR.
