Today saw Google formally introduce its new smartphone, the Pixel phone. In fact, in accordance with the speculation that had been rife prior to the event, Google introduced two variants of the Pixel phone, the standard Pixel phone and the Pixel XL. Generally speaking, both variants adopt a very similar level of presentation and specs and identical features. In fact, the biggest differences between the two models is that the XL variant comes with a larger 5.5-inch QHD display and a greater capacity 3,450 mAh battery.
As part of the new Pixels announcement, Google also confirmed some details on their availability. Most notably that the two devices are now able to be pre-ordered as unlocked smartphones from the Google Store starting today. While those who are hoping to pick one up via a carrier, Google did confirm that the Pixels will be available to buy through Verizon. In fact, Google confirmed that the the Pixel and the Pixel XL will be exclusive to Verizon. Something which Verizon themselves later on confirmed again, while also confirming their pre-orders are now live as well.
Following that announcement from Verizon, the carrier has also now put out one of their own unboxing videos for the Pixel phones. The video does showcase both the Pixel and the Pixel XL and interestingly, is shot mostly using the cameras on the two devices. Which does mean that you do get a fairly good idea of how the cameras perform on the latest Pixel phones. Which incidentally, seems to be a big selling feature with these devices as Google was quick to point out during the launch event that the Pixel phone achieved a DxOMark rating of 89, the highest rating that has been awarded to a smartphone so far. Of course, while the cameras do seem to take centre stage in this video, the video does draw on some of the other notable features that on offer with the two new Pixel phones as well, including the use of the Google Assistant, Android Pay and the suggested seven hours of usage that can be achieved after only a quick 15 minute charge.
