Google’s Daydream View officially launches tomorrow, which is also when the headset begins to ship to those who pre-ordered, and when people can expect to purchase it outside of pre-order status. Leading up to the launch it appears that several games and experiences that are meant for the Daydream View have already hit the Play Store to download and install. Of course, to use any of these apps you’ll need to have the Daydream View to slot your phone into, but now that the Google VR services app is available on the Play Store getting the headset is the last step.
As for what’s already available, likely one of the most anticipated experiences is Fantastic Beasts, which is a VR experience based on the upcoming film from the Harry Potter universe, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Not quite game and not quite app, the experience is a nice blend of the two that allows you to explore the wizarding world of Fantastic Beasts. Also available is the CNN VR app, which essentially lets you catch up on all the latest breaking news in a virtual reality setting.
You’ll also find that a couple of games are now available, the first of which is called Hunters Gate. This is an action-arcade shooter with two playable classes (character types) where you’ll need to defend the town of Hunters Gate from a demon invasion. There looks to be loads of weapons and abilities for your characters to use, plenty of demon enemies, and some intense 3D graphics to delight your senses as you immerse yourself in this world. Unlike most of the available experiences so far, Hunters Gate will set you back $5.99. In addition to Hunters Gate the other game on offer is called Mekorama VR, a $3.99 puzzle game where you’ll need to assist a bumbling robot named B find his way back to his home world. To do so, you’ll need to help him escape a world of dioramas, and there are 50 total levels to complete that were built by the game’s developers. However, Mekorama VR seems to have limitless replay value as players can build their own levels and submit them. There are “thousands” already available online according to the game’s listing, which means you can continue playing to your heart’s content. There’s also a VR experience news app from the Guardian available, but instead of having you watch the latest news in a virtual setting, Guardian VR dumps you right into the story as if you were part of it. Google Street View in VR is also now available, as is an experience from BBC called The Turning Forest, which has you follow around a creature on its journey in what BBC is describing as a virtual fairy tale. This last one, unfortunately doesn’t seem to be available in the U.S. yet. As stated above, you’ll need Google VR Services installed for any of these apps to work, which can be found in the Play Store by hitting the button below.
