2010’s Metro 2033 and its 2013 sequel, Metro: Last Light are two of the most beloved PC games in recent memory. Dark, gritty, and moody, they challenge the player to adapt to their environment and be ready to shift gears at a moment’s notice between the thick of battle with crowds of monsters, and a moody, unnerving, and story-rich roam through Moscow’s underground. Both of them got a remix in 2014 to bring them up to spec and give Xbox One and Playstation 4 owners the opportunity to try them out, and this version of the older game, Metro 2033 Redux, has found its way onto NVIDIA’s GeForce Now service for SHIELD devices. As it happens, the game is free for all GeForce Now members from now until November 6.
On top of being widely regarded as a great game, Metro 2033 Redux brings the original 2010 game up to the technical standards held by the 2013 sequel, which is still used as a benchmark for gaming PCs coming out today. To give a frame of reference for just what kind of power this game requires, playing at a mere 1920 x 1080 resolution on the highest settings goes at about 92 frames per second on the NVIDIA GTX 1080, one of the best PC graphics cards around. That may sound high, but the game was released in 2014, and the GTX 1080 is a VR-ready card, easily able to smash most games at a very eye-friendly 120 frames per second or higher. Through the magic of streaming, an Android-based device that’s probably less powerful than today’s average desktop PC is able to run the game perfectly.
GeForce Now costs $7.99 per month, and allows players to stream popular titles from powerful PCs to their SHIELD devices, whether they own the SHIELD Tablet, original SHIELD Portable, or either version of the SHIELD TV. That $7.99 per month is more than just the access price, of course; it nets you access to 50 of the more popular titles that the service has to offer right off the bat, with the right to purchase other releases as you see fit. While Metro 2033 is not included in the list of normal free titles, users who haven’t given the Metro series a try before or simply want a free game are welcome to it until November 6. The game includes a Steam key, allowing you to try your hand at cranking the settings up a bit, if you happen to have a superpowered rig laying around.
