Facebook has tons of features available via its main social network service, but the company has also made many of those features available as standalone experiences, too. Such is the case with Messenger as well as their Moments app (which just recently launched on the web in a light version), and now Facebook has also made its events feature available on Android with the new Events from Facebook application. The app will work similarly to the events section in Facebook, but should be able to provide more of a detailed focus on activities and fun things happening around you since it’s offered in a standalone experience.
That being said, what you get with Events from Facebook is just as it sounds, a dedicated hub where you can browse nearby events as well as events that have been set up by friends or family which you were invited to. The main difference with this app and what you actually find in Facebook is that events and activities going on are always front and center, instead of on a separate page you have to get to by clicking on the category under the shortcuts section that’s off to the left of your Facebook feed. While this won’t matter to all users, it’s likely to help plenty of people prevent missing upcoming events as often.
As soon as you open up the app the very first thing you’re going to see on the Homepage are any upcoming events that are happening in your local area, whether you’ve been invited to them or not. You’ll also see past events that happened recently, although this in particular might just make you feel disappointed if it happens to an event you were interested in but ended up missing. Like Facebook, Events will send you notifications as well unless you choose to disable them, which might be a hugely beneficial feature if you’re trying to cut down on the amount of alerts you’re getting. In addition to the events listings on the homepage, the bottom navigation bar also hosts a search feature where you can search for a specific event if you don’t see it in the feed, as well as a calendar that can be integrated with your Google Calendar if you so choose, which will list events that you have created for your calendar, as well as any events which you have already accepted through Facebook and will be attending. While there isn’t much different here from Facebook’s integrated Events feature, it still comes in handy, and it’s free.
