Terms ‘Virtual Reality (VR)’ and ‘Augmented Reality (AR)’ have been thrown around quite frequently in the last year or so, and there’s a good reason for it. Both virtual reality and augmented reality are considered to be the future of gaming, designing, decorating interiors, etc. This technology is being developed by the largest tech companies out there, but also by some smaller companies and individuals. The HTC Vive, PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift are probably the three most popular VR headsets out there, while AR technology has been showcased by Google through their Tango project, and this term has also been mentioned quite frequently along with the Pokemon GO game which has been immensely popular this year.
That being said, we’re here to talk about an interesting headset that is currently being presented on Kickstarter, the Okularion. This is the first wireless mixed reality headset out there, what does this mean? Well, this headset is wireless, and it also combines both VR and AR technologies, which sounds quite exciting. There are 40 more days to go for this headset on Kickstarter, and it has a goal of $250,000. Almost 30 people backed the project thus far, the project managed to collect $5,586 at the time of writing this article, which means they still have a long way to go in order to reach their goal. Now, this headset does seem interesting, and its creator, John Wiacek, says that it will retail for less than $300 should the Kickstarter campaign turn out to be a success.
The Okularion headset works on its own, you don’t need a computer or a smartphone in order to use it, which is great, of course. This headset is supposed to ship with two controllers, and it includes a stereoscopic display with multiple adjustments, gesture recognition and an AR camera which is supposed to track the world around you. Mr. Wiacek says that the Okularion headset will ship with tools “that let everyone start to produce, share, and play their own content”. The Okularion is not that heavy at all, according to its creator, though we still don’t know its exact weight. This headset is supposed to ship in two variants, Basic and Pro. The basic model will ship with the MT8321 quad-core SoC, 2K display, 2GB of RAM and a 2,500mAh battery. The Pro model is expected to sport the Snapdragon 821 64-bit quad-core SoC, 4K display, 6GB of RAM and a 3,000mAh battery.
