Amazon Working on VR Shopping Apps, According to Job Listing

Virtual Reality has been a big topic in recent years, with companies like Facebook working to make their core app available in Virtual Reality, it now appears that Amazon may be working on some shopping apps that can be used in Virtual Reality. The company has just posted a new job on LinkedIn, “Creative Director, Virtual Reality”. The description for the position says that an eligible applicant would need to accomplish tasks that include “the future of Amazon’s VR solutions and guide our creative and technical teams to produce compelling, world-class experiences.” According to the LinkedIn post, this job is going to be part of their A9 team. This is the team behind product search and advertising for Amazon.com. The job offer also mentions that they “are building Amazon’s VR shopping experience for use by millions of customers on a wide variety of VR devices.”

Amazon is always looking for new ways to get shoppers to buy more and more items from them. In fact, all of their own hardware is centered around doing just that. Now this job posting doesn’t mean that they are looking to create their own VR headset, but that likely isn’t out of the realm of possibility. The job offer does pretty guarantee that we may be seeing an Amazon shopping app available in VR in the near future, which is going to be pretty interesting. And it’s something that we’ll likely be seeing from more and more retailers, especially as virtual reality becomes a bigger and bigger deal.

It’s interesting to see that the job posting didn’t specify that the VR app(s) would be available for just one virtual reality platform, but for multiple platforms. There are already multiple VR platforms available, and there will likely be a few more platforms turning up in the near future. Of course, the biggest ones are Google’s Daydream, Samsung’s Gear VR, the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift. All of which are at different price points and some are bigger markets than others at this point in the virtual reality world.
