According to some new user agent profiles that have recently appeared online, Sony may be preparing to launch the G3112 and the G3221, two new smartphones equipped with MediaTek’s Helio P20 processor. For the last few years, Sony’s smartphone division has largely skipped CES in favor of unveiling smartphones at the annual MWC trade show in Barcelona and 2017 will seemingly be no different. New user profiles reveal that the G3112 and the G3221 are featuring displays boasting a 720p and a 1080p resolution, respectively. Furthermore, both smartphones are listed as being powered by MediaTek’s octa-core Helio P20 processor.
This is not the first time that smartphones with these codenames have leaked, though the latest user agent profiles do not line up with previous rumors surrounding the devices. Initially, the Sony G3112 was listed as featuring a 1080p resolution which the latest report downgrades to 720p. Additionally, the higher-end Sony G3221 was previously rumored to feature an impressive 4K display, but the user agent profile that can be seen below suggests that the device will sport a 1080p display. One final difference is the processor fueling the two phones. Previous rumors pointed towards the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, though the devices are now listed as being powered by the MediaTek Helio P20.
MediaTek’s processors have historically been cheaper than Qualcomm’s offerings, so the CPU change mentioned above could have been made in a cost-cutting effort. Likewise, the significant reduction in display resolution hints at the fact that the G3112 and the G3221 may no longer be aimed at the high-end market and could instead be launched as successors to the Sony Xperia XA and the Xperia X. With these two devices being unveiled last year at MWC, an announcement of their respective successors at this year’s trade show in Barcelona would not be an odd move. Furthermore, the fact that the company’s current flagship — the Xperia XZ — was released in late September means it’s less likely Sony will be looking to launch an updated flagship smartphone in the coming months. In any case, with MWC just over a month away, it won’t be too long before Sony unveils its latest smartphone lineup. More leaks surrounding these devices are likely to follow in the meantime.
