Kantar Worldpanel has released new data on the market performance of smartphones for the three month period ending November 2016, and according to the data, it appears that the market share for Android OS has declined in several key regions across the globe while gaining a better grip in others, including China. Meanwhile, it appears that the iOS platform has increased in popularity across Europe and the United States.
According to Kantar Worldpanel, at the beginning of the holiday season, the three most popular smartphones in the United States were powered by iOS. The iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone 6s were the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd most popular smartphones in the US at that particular point in time, holding 31.3% market share combined. The 4th and 5th best-selling smartphones in the US were branded by Samsung and were none other than the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, for a total of 28.9% share. The data also shows that despite the fact that Android lost 5.1% of the smartphone market throughout the three month period ending November 2016 compared to the year before, Google’s Pixel smartphones “made strong gains”, accounting for 1.3% of sales within the same timeframe. Meanwhile, the entirety of iOS grew to 43.5% in the US, up from 37.1% a year ago, whereas the Android platform now accounts for 55.3% of the US market, down from 60.4%.
In China, the Android platform continues to be dominant and at the end of November 2016, data shows that Android OS gained 7.2% market share for a total of 79.7%, up from a year ago when Android OS was accounting for 72.7% of the Chinese market. Meanwhile, iOS has lost another 5.4% market share in China, however, the platform managed to improve its presence notably compared to a year ago in regions including Great Britain (9.1%), France (6.5%), Italy (3.9%), Spain (2.2), Australia (5.9%), Japan (3.3%) and upped its presence across the EU5 by 2.8%. Unfortunately for the Android platform, this leads to losing market share in Great Britain (-1.8%), France (-1.7%), Spain (-0.8%), Australia (-3.6%), and Japan (-2.4%). As for other mobile platforms, sadly it looks like Windows Phone is sinking deeper in all regions except for Japan, where the platform gained a mere 0.1% market share in the three-month period ending November 2016 compared to a year before, for a total share of 0.4%.
