According to a new leak from China, Lenovo is actually beta testing ZUI on the Moto Z handsets. Now, this sentence might seem a bit confusing for those of you who are unfamiliar with ZUI, this is actually a third-party Android skin / UI which ships on top of Android on ZUK’s smartphones. ZUK is a China-based smartphone manufacturer, a company which is backed by Lenovo, and is actually referred to as Lenovo’s subsidiary by some people, even though that’s not exactly an accurate description of this company.
Well, if this leak is to be believed, we might see ZUI ship along with future Moto devices, which means that Lenovo plans to remove the almost-stock Android experience people have been enjoying thus far. According to the provided info, Lenovo actually hand-picked 25 beta testers which will test ZUI on Moto Z and Moto Z Play smartphones. ZUK actually introduced ZUI 2.5 not long ago, a ZUI version which is based on Android 7.0 Nougat, while the former v2.0 was based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. This new version of ZUI comes pre-installed on ZUK’s recently-released flagship, the ZUK Edge, and it seems like we might see ZUI ship with Moto Z devices in the future as well, at least if this info is to be believed.
Do keep in mind that we don’t have an official confirmation from Lenovo at the moment, or anything of the sort, this information is based on what source has to say, and the leaked screenshot which, in all honesty, is not really saying all that much considering it’s in Chinese and we don’t know its source, but it’s talking about ZUI beta testing on Moto Z devices. It is possible Lenovo plans to ship ZUI-powered Moto Z devices in China only, and that international models will come with the almost-stock Android we’re used to, but that’s not likely if they switch to ZUI in China, as ZUK already has an international version of ZUI standing by, they’re shipping it on the devices they sell in India.
