At CES 2017 earlier this month, NVIDIA took the wraps off of their second-generation SHIELD TV set-top box, which is running on Android TV. The set-top box is now available for sale today, starting at $199, after being available for pre-order for a little over a week. The NVIDIA SHIELD TV was the best Android TV set-top box, and now the new version is even better. NVIDIA has made it a great set-top box, but also a great console for playing some of your favorite games on. The NVIDIA SHIELD TV also kept the original price tag, which was a bit surprising given all of the changes and added features that it boasts.
Perhaps the biggest feature of the new NVIDIA SHIELD TV is the fact that it has the Google Assistant. Allowing you to talk to your TV and ask it for things like finding the latest dramas from Netflix, or telling it to play your favorite TV show and so much more. Now with NVIDIA adding support for Google Assistant, it was a bit harder than just adding the ability to speak to Google Assistant. They had to also build a visual interface for it. Which is still quite new, and definitely in beta, but it is a great feature to add to the SHIELD TV, and will definitely help it compete with the many set-top boxes and TV’s that have Amazon’s Alexa inside it already.
As of today, the NVIDIA SHIELD TV is available for purchase at Newegg and Amazon. Both retailers have it available for $199 and that comes with the controller and the remote. But it does not come with the NVIDIA SPOT (which is essentially their version of Google Home). The NVIDIA SHIELD TV is shipping today, and if you have Amazon Prime, you’ll have it in your hands within 2 days or less, which is pretty impressive in its own right. The NVIDIA SHIELD TV is running on Android Nougat, and brings you 4K HDR content to your TV – this is mostly only effective if your TV supports 4K HDR content.
