Power Rangers has a few mobile games under its belt as a franchise, but Power Rangers: Legacy Wars, coming this March, will be the first one to feature the new Power Rangers heroes and villains from the upcoming reboot. The new game is going to be a real-time fighting game, though nothing in the vein of BlazBlue or Soul Calibur. The trailer shows something that more closely apes Warner Brothers’ mobile fighters, such as Injustice: Gods Among Us, and Mortal Kombat X. Mid-battle ally summons are also shown, implying that there will likely be some sort of character earning or card system in place.
The action shown in the trailer looks to be a bit on the stiff side, but well-suited to a mobile form factor, much like the aforementioned Warner Brothers fighting games. These games normally involve swiping and tapping to execute basic attacks and special moves during your turn, but this game may be fully real-time, and the control method was not shown in the trailer. The graphics on show are top-notch for a mobile title, and clearly show every detail of the intricate costumes that the new Power Rangers are sporting. Environments are rendered in some detail as well, and the whole thing comes together looking quite nice.
Longtime fans of the series, especially fans of the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers may want to take note that the game’s landing page image includes what appears to be the original Green Ranger, a cameo that seems likely to happen in the movie and has been talked about on the internet quite a bit. The same landing page includes an image of Goldar, a classic Power Rangers villain. In short, longtime fans of the franchise can expect a bit of a love letter in this game. Coming on the heels of a recent Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers brawler released onto PSN and the XBOX Store, this game seems to be a much more focused and mature affair, but those looking to relive the glory days of deep, action-packed Power Rangers platformers and fighters back in the SNES and Sega Genesis era will want to look elsewhere.
