On Thursday, AT&T announced that they were basically unlocking their unlimited data plan so that those that aren’t subscribed to U-verse or DIRECTV could sign up for their unlimited plan beginning today. Well it is now available on their website. If you are a current customer, you can sign up or switch over to the new plan. For new customers, you can switch over to AT&T and now get unlimited data. But it doesn’t seem to be the best option compared to the other three carriers with unlimited data.
AT&T’s plan is actually $60/month the same as their 6GB plan, but that is just for data. This does not include the monthly access fee (which ranges from $10 to $40/month depending on your device) or the monthly payment for your smartphone (if you bought it through AT&T NEXT). So if you are on the 6GB plan, you should actually see the price remain the same, perhaps some different taxes and fees added on, but for the most part, the final bill amount will be the same. Additionally, AT&T has added their Stream Saver feature onto this plan. So that means that all video is streaming at 480p. There’s no option to pay more to opt into it streaming in HD at all. Which is a bit unfortunate, especially for those with phones that have QHD displays and want to watch YouTube in full HD or higher resolution.
Like their competitors, unlimited data on AT&T could mean only 22GB, depending on if you are in a congested area. They do mention that if you are in a congested area and use more than 22GB of data in a month, you may be deprioritized for the remainder of the month. Of course, there is a strong possibility that this may not happen, it all depends on whether you are in a congested area or not. So keep that in mind if you do want to switch over to this new unlimited plan on AT&T. It’s not a bad plan, but there are better options available at Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile.
