It seems Google is testing yet another change to the way in which the Google Play Store looks and works. For most people, when the Google Play Store is first launched (on a mobile device), it likely shows two clear tabs. One labeled ‘Apps & Games’ and one labeled ‘Movies, Music, Books’ with the idea being that there is some separation between smartphone-only content like apps and games, and that of multi-platform content, like movies, music and books.
Well, it seems for some, this clear distinction is less distinct nowadays as users are reporting that their Play Store front page now includes more than two tabs. Significantly more in fact as the screenshots below (provided to Android Police) show six tabs are in effect for those users. These are labeled (in order) ‘Apps’, ‘Games’, ‘Movies & TV’, ‘Music’, ‘Books’, and ‘Newsstand’. Needless to say, the idea being that when you are on the front page, the ability to get to the exact subcategory that you are looking for, is as quick as possible.
It is probably worth noting that this is not the only UI change that has been noticed of late, as it does seem as though Google is constantly testing a number of different designs and general changes. Two of the most recent of which include swipeable cards for Play Store app listings and a ‘refresh’ button for app updating. Likewise, even this change seems to be an extension of a previous change, as in the past, the current ‘Movies, Music, Books’ tab did appear as the even vaguer ‘Entertainment’ tab, as shown in the main image above. So the two takeaways here is that firstly, not everyone is going to see this change on their Google Play Store right now. In fact, it seems likely that it is only a select few users who will be seeing it at the moment. Secondly, this also means that there is no guarantee that the change will ever make it to a general release. So while it is now being noted for some, presumably depending on the feedback they receive about this change, will play a major role in determining whether the rest of the Google Play Store community gets to see it.
