LG is looking to manufacture mid-range devices that are styled like the LG G6, the South Korean consumer electronics manufacturer revealed. While the tech giant was reluctant to go into a lot of details, Android Authority reports that LG’s design team said that future mid-range devices made by the company will strive to emulate the look of the LG G6. The comment specifically refers to the slim top and bottom bezels of LG’s latest Android flagship, as well as its unconventional 18:9 aspect ratio. The company’s representatives didn’t mention a particular timeframe to accompany their revelation and given the current state of affairs, it seems likely that the look of the LG G6 won’t trickle down to LG’s mid-range devices in the immediate future.
Regardless, LG’s comments clearly indicate that the Seoul-based tech giant is now adamant to pursue a unified design philosophy that the company has seemingly been missing in recent years, as evidenced by the radical differences between the design of the LG G4, G5, and the newly announced G6. The press conference during which the LG G6 was unveiled earlier today had a large focus on the 18:9, i.e. 2:1 aspect ratio of LG’s latest Android flagship. Coupled with the aforementioned comments, LG’s MWC conference seemingly suggests that the South Korean phone maker believes this unusual aspect ratio may be the future of all media consumption. This would explain why the company is apparently adamant to emulate the look and the aspect ratio of the LG G6 with its upcoming mid-range phones despite the fact that there’s currently no financially viable solution to do that. Non-flagship devices have thinner profit margins and LG’s mobile division wasn’t exactly posting record profits in recent years, so the decision to commit significant resources to research and development of a completely new style of non-premium devices certainly wasn’t made lightly.
However, LG apparently made up its mind regarding its future product design philosophy and it remains to be seen whether the company manages to realize its vision and if it does – how long will it take to do that. In the meantime, the thin bezels and the 18:9 aspect ratio will likely remain an exclusive feature of the LG G6, at least until the LG V30 hits the market in the second half of the year.
