Alcatel Idol 5S Visits GFXBench, Reconfirming Specs

The yet-to-be-announced Alcatel Idol 5S is making the rounds once again following its brief appearance on GeekBench in February, as it recently passed through GFXBench leaving a list of hardware specifications and benchmark scores in its trail. According to the benchmarking website, the Alcatel Idol 5S will be powered by a MediaTek MTK6757CH Helio P20 System-on-Chip, and will run Android 7.0 Nougat “Alcatel Edition” out of the box.

The GFXBench listing further confirms a 5.2-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, an ARM Mali-T880 graphics chip, and 32 GB of on-board storage, out of which 23 GB is available to the user. Additionally, the Alcatel Idol 5S will apparently be equipped with a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus, face detection, and HDR photography, whereas the front panel will accommodate an 8-megapixel sensor. A list of additional features makes mention of a gyroscope and accelerometer, a GPS module, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, but the smartphone appears to be lacking NFC capabilities. Last but not least, the operating system is described as “Android Alcatel Edition” but make no mistake; this is a customized version of Android 7.0 Nougat running Alcatel’s proprietary user interface on top.

As for the smartphone’s performance in the GFXBench synthetic benchmarks, the Alcatel Idol 5S topped an average of 4.4 frames per second in the on-screen Car Chase OpenGL ES 3.1 + AEP benchmark and 4.1 FPS off-screen. The Manhattan test shows similar results, with an average of 11 frames per second on-screen and 10.5 FPS off-screen. This is rather odd given the fact that smartphones usually perform better in off-screen benchmarks than otherwise, but this discrepancy could be attributed to software bugs not being ironed out just yet, and ultimately the smartphone not yet being ready for a market release. Nevertheless, as far as on-screen benchmark results are concerned, the Alcatel Idol 5S shows an increase in performance over the Alcatel Idol 4S launched last year with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 System-on-Chip under the hood. The aforementioned model scores an average of 3.3 FPS and 9.3 FPS (on-screen) in Car Chase and Manhattan benchmarks respectively. As far as the launch of the Alcatel Idol 5S is concerned, official details are lacking but it’s worth noting that the previous model was announced in February 2016 and launched in July the same year.
