The last Moto Z device released was the Moto Z Play – a more affordably priced Moto Z that could still use the Moto Mods. It is also the last of the Moto Z’s to be waiting on its Android 7.0 Nougat upgrade, although that new seems to be changing as it seems the Canadian carriers, Rogers and Telus, are currently in the process of pushing out the upgrade to the Moto Z Play. Other carriers are sure to follow with this almost 1GB upgrade that will carry the build number of NPN25.137-24-1. While it is rolling out now, if you do not receive your upgrade right away, you can always try to force it along by going to Settings–>System updates–>Check for system updates, to see if it is ready to download.
The new Nougat upgrade is more than just a tasty morsel. It offers up not only visual improvements and time-saving features, but also there is a lot going on behind the scenes to make the Android experience even better. Just-in-Time (JIT) is there to improve how the OS handles your apps – it reduces the amount of space each one takes up on your device, ensuring more RAM for productivity and it also helps apps run in a lower RAM environment, or on entry level devices. There is also improvements to help better manage how apps run in the background. By optimizing the software, those apps running behind the scenes use less memory and save battery life. While the Vulkan API support works to make graphics as realistic as possible, with better reflections, less motion blur, and life-like water effects.
Items in the Android 7.0 Nougat that are more visually apparent include Multi-Window, which allows you to run two apps at once in a split-screen fashion. You can quickly jump from on app to another and whatever you are doing in one app will not affect the other app from running. For instance, you might pull up a music video or song you want to listen to while you check your email. That is no problem – start your music in one window and while it plays, check out your email in the other window. With Quick Switch, you can jump from one app to another by double tapping the app switcher. The updated notifications panel is also significantly improved, and you can even customize the drop down panel.
