The batteries powering the newly announced Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus will deteriorate much more slowly than those featured in the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge, Samsung revealed. Both devices are set to lose their effective battery capacity at a significantly slower rate than their predecessors, the company claims, citing numbers based on the first year of standard usage. The Seoul-based consumer electronics manufacturer stated that both the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus will retain approximately 95 percent of their initial battery capacity after a year of regular use, which is a significant improvement over the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge whose effective battery capacity would typically drop to around 80 percent within the same time frame.
Given how the South Korean tech giant didn’t reveal many details regarding improvements and the technology that allowed this impressive advancement in its efforts of fighting battery degradation, it’s reasonable to presume that the company or its suppliers relied on proprietary battery and charging technology, as well as patented power management solutions. Apart from impressive resistance to lithium degradation, the batteries powering the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus are in line with what previous reports have indicated. The smaller variant of Samsung’s latest Android flagship is powered by a 3,000mAh battery, while its larger sibling features a 3,500mAh one. The former number corresponds to the battery that shipped with the Galaxy S7, though the latter is actually smaller than the capacity of the Galaxy S7 Edge, which might be an issue considering the significant upgrade in screen real estate of both devices.
On the other hand, both the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus are powered by 10nm chipsets — the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and the Samsung-made Exynos 8895, depending one the region — which are said to be much more efficient than their predecessors. All of this means that the phones should last users through the day just like the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge did and will still be able to charge just as quickly.
