The Samsung Desktop Experience (DeX) Station for the Galaxy S8 has apparently been leaked online by an industry insider Roland Quandt who also uncovered the alleged price tag of the device. According to the report, the DeX Station will be priced at €149.99 in Europe, which translates to approximately $162. Rumors about the accessory have been circulating the industry for several months after Samsung filed for a related trademark back in January. According to the source, the DeX Station will be compatible with both the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus and will allow users to connect their flagship smartphones to a computer or an external monitor and control them using a keyboard and a mouse.
The same source reveals that the DeX Station will feature an ethernet port, two USB Type-A ports, a USB Type-C port, and a single HDMI port capable of outputting 4K videos in 30 frames per second. Finally, the Samsung-made accessory for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus will apparently sport a cooling fan. The first alleged render of the device can be seen above. Like all of the other official accessories for Samsung’s upcoming Android flagship duo, the DeX Station is expected to be unveiled on March 29 when Samsung is holding the so-called “Unpacked” event in New York City. There’s still no word on a firm release date of the DeX Station, but presuming that the dock won’t hit the market any later than the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus do, it will likely launch in the second half of April. Finally, consumers in the United States probably won’t have to pay more for the accessory than Europeans will.
While it’s unlikely that Samsung will advertise an optional, €150 dock as one of the main selling points of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus, the accessory still has the potential to drastically change the way consumers interact with their smartphones on an everyday basis. While phone-to-PC concepts aren’t a novel idea by any means, no tech company has yet managed to commercialize them, so it remains to be seen whether Samsung’s upcoming accessory will manage to turn the Galaxy S8 into a truly versatile mobile computer.
