Google Adds More News To 'News & Weather' App

Google announced that it is updating its News & Weather experience for Android and iOS users, the company said that the app will deliver even more news. Google said that it discovered users would scroll to the bottom of the News & Weather app’s home page on their mobile devices in search of more news only to find that the stream has ended. To offer News & Weather users even more content, Google has added more than 200 news stories to the stream. All you’ll need to do is scroll to the “More Headlines” section, where you’ll find even more content from sections such as Business, Tech, Entertainment and Sports.

According to Google, stories in the More Headlines section are loaded on demand, so you’ll find even more stories the more you scroll and keep reading past the top headlines of the day. The latest change also includes Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) articles, so stories load quicker. The content is ranked, and cards for popular stories will be listed first. If you want a deeper dive into any of the stories, you can click the card to expand the news.

Google said that it applied its own algorithm to rank the stream and cluster relevant stories together. The More Headlines option will be rolling out to mobile users over the coming days, Google announced in a blog post, and all you’ll need to do is keep scrolling to discover more news stories. Previously, the last major update to the News & Weather app brought a Lite mode, which reduced data consumption by about a third and allows pages to load more quickly. In addition to saving on data charges, Lite mode is a feature that is also beneficial for users in areas with slower 2G or 3G mobile networks. If you haven’t downloaded News & Weather, you can grab it for free from the Google Play Store.

In addition to the News & Weather app, Google also maintains the Google Play Newsstand app. News junkies can catch the top news stories, follow their favorite digital publishers and even subscribe to magazines and periodicals through the Google Play Newsstand app. There are some differences between News & Weather and the Google Play Newsstand app. News & Weather essentially displays the same information that’s provided from Google News, while Google Play Newsstand is for subscriptions, curated content and collections of news based on topics of interests.
