Muji has debuted a pair of jeans with a special pocket designed to hold your smartphone, although they seem to have initially launched earlier this year in January. With screen sizes creeping up with new smartphone releases, the benefit to owning a device with a larger screen is that it can display more content. The downside, however, is that larger phones are not quite as pocketable, often leaving unsightly bulges when they’re stowed inside the pockets of most pants. Hopefully, Muji’s special denim jeans will come with a more streamlined look with its special pocket designed specifically to house your phone when it’s not in use.
The special smartphone compartment is located on the back, and it sits just higher than the normal rear pocket located on the right on most pairs of jeans. “It’s placed purposely off centered,” Muji said of the design, “so you don’t have to worry about ever sitting on it.” While Muji is marketing the sixth pocket for eliminating unsightly bulges, there is another potential benefit with this design. Given that some people carry their phones in the same pocket with items like keys and coins, isolating the phone in its own separate compartment means that your device won’t come into contact with other everyday objects that you may place in your other pockets, and your device will be less prone to scratches.
In the image of the jeans, it seems that the smartphone pocket can accommodate an Apple iPhone 6- or iPhone 7-sized device with a slim case, but it’s unclear at this time whether a larger phone will be able to fit in that pocket. It’s likely that Android devices around the same size as a Samsung Galaxy S7 will fit as well, but larger phones may not fit with as much ease. Also, it seems that although the iPhone fits the top portion of the phone is left exposed. While this design makes it easy for you to quickly retrieve your smartphone, the drawback is that a phone that’s visible on the rear may attract thieves if you’re in a crowded urban environment.
