Samsung’s Gear S3 Frontier has now started receiving a relatively small OTA update as of yesterday, but nobody seems to really know what the most prominent feature in the update is. The update is reportedly only available to the LTE-enabled version of the Tizen-powered wearable and comes with around 35 MB of changes. Those changes do include most of the line items that users have come to expect with new versions of a device’s software. However, the changelog associated with the update – which is usually shown to a user in order to help them better understand what is included in the update – includes a brand new feature called “Jansky Wearable.” Which appears to be something that there is little to no literature currently available on. While there is plenty of speculation that it may simply be a new watch face or some other minor UI element change, nobody really seems to know for sure. The fact that it is only applicable to the LTE-enabled version of the device could also point to changes in how the smartwatch handles LTE connections.
With regards to the other changes included in the update to Gear S3 Frontier’s underlying software, Samsung has been somewhat more clear. The changelog simply says that such software updates can – and this one likely does – include bug fixes and stability improvements. There is also a statement made in the changelog regarding security policy changes. That changelog entry simply asserts that users will not be able to downgrade back to the previous version of the software after they update the LTE wearable to the latest software version. Samsung cites updates to the security policy as reasons for this.
Unfortunately, it seems as though it may take some time for the obscurity around exactly what the “Jansky Wearable” portion of the update is, to be cleared away. In the meantime though, there’s usually nothing wrong with grabbing an update just for its security updates and bug fixes. The update has been rolling out as of March 7 and if you have not seen it arrive as of yet, you likely will in the coming days, if not hours.
