Verizon is now pushing Nougat to the Moto Z Play DROID today which means that users of the device will be able to finally move forward off of the Android Marshmallow software that it launched with. Verizon mentions that the update has already been tested so users with the Moto Z Play DROID edition shouldn’t have any issues with the software once it’s installed, and they’ll be able to experience all of the benefits that come along with Android 7.0 Nougat which includes a handful of new features and changes, not the least of which is the newly added multi-window capability that will allow users to open up two apps on the screen simultaneously.
The update is starting to head out to devices as of today it looks like, so while some users on the network with the Moto Z Play DROID edition will end up seeing the alert that the software update is available today, not all users will see the update immediately and it may take a few days before it rolls out to everyone. That being said, users can as always check for the update manually by navigating to the settings menu on their device, scrolling down to the about phone menu, then tapping on the software updates option to see if the update can be pulled down from the network.
Verizon doesn’t note on their support page how large the update file is, but with it being a jump from Marshmallow to Nougat it should be a fairly decent size which means users will probably want to initiate the download of the file after they have connected to Wi-Fi instead of trying to complete the download over the cellular network, but if Wi-Fi isn’t available the update can still be initiated over Verizon tower connections. In addition to multi-window, the Nougat update also brings other features to the Moto Z Play DROID like quick app switching, customizable quick tiles, direct replies to notifications, and of course app shortcuts. In addition to sending out the Android Nougat update to the Moto Z Play DROID edition today, Verizon has also begun sending out the March Android Security update to Pixel device owners on their network.
