For the past few years, Samsung and a few other manufacturers have been offering up some free gifts for purchasing their flagship device within a specific window. With the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, Samsung was offering up a free Gear VR with Controller, which was announced at Mobile World Congress back in February. It now appears to be shipping to those that pre-ordered the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus and redeemed their gift. This is according to a number of users on Google+ who have been receiving their Gear VR with Controller in hand.
The Gear VR with Controller is worth around $130, so that’s a pretty nice prize to have included with your new smartphone. And you still get that pair of AKG earbuds that are also about $100, in the box. The Gear VR with Controller does have a USB-C connector, but there is also an adapter that can be used for Samsung’s older devices, that use a micro USB connector. Remember that the Gear VR is only compatible with Samsung’s flagship smartphones. These include the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. It is built by Oculus, and there are plenty of apps available for the Gear VR already, along with plenty of games too. In fact, there are a number of games compatible with the controller already in the store. So you can really make the most of your new Gear VR.
For those that have not ordered the Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus but are thinking about it, you have until May 25th to do so, and get the Gear VR headset for free. Samsung does note that it may take 4-6 weeks for it to arrive, but for many, it’s taking less than a week, seeing as the devices only launched last Friday (although some orders did come in a couple of days early). So it appears that Samsung is doing a good job at getting these Gear VR with Controller headsets out pretty quickly for everyone to enjoy.
