Google Classroom users can now create their own classes as Google has just announced that they’re starting to roll out the new feature for anyone that uses the service. While it won’t be available to everyone right away as it may take a little bit of time before it visually appears for everybody, those who use Classroom actively and were looking forward to this capability are urged to check out whether or not it’s possible for them to already give things a go.
Google says that the ability to create your own classes has been in a pilot status for the last few weeks or so with a select number of both teachers and students to get a feel for how things worked and see what if any changes needed to be made to improve the overall experience. Now that it’s had some fair testing Google is ready to make it available to everyone. Google initially announced the classroom creation feature back when they announced that they would be opening Classroom up to personal Google account users, which was in the middle of last month and plenty of time for Google to allow a smaller group of users to dip a toe in the waters.
As part of the pilot testing there are already a handful of classes that have been created by both educators and students alike. Google highlights a few of them including one that teaches students about Graphic Design, another which was used as a means for sharing ideas and resources for a Girl Scouts Robotics Club, and one more which focuses on a club called GameDev Society that was created by a Brazilian university student. These examples paint a pretty nice picture of how Classroom can be used even if the groups that are being created aren’t necessarily an actual class. That being said, with some of the pilot testers using Classroom in new and innovative ways after Google put out the new feature, and then highlighting those uses, it opens the door for more users to hop on board and perhaps check out how Classroom can be worked into their lives as well.
