Sony Xperia X owners participating in the Concept program will start receiving the Android 7.1.2 update for their smartphones this week, shortly after Google released that version of the Android OS to its Nexus and Pixel smartphones. The update will include improved fingerprint swipe gestures performance, Bluetooth connectivity improvements, new battery usage alerts, and other general software fixes. For those who may fear that the performance of the fingerprint scanner may be affected by this update like what happened to some Pixel smartphones updated to Android 7.1.2, Sony has clarified that the fingerprint scanner performance fix will not be a part of the update pushed to its Xperia X units. The company, however, has warned all Xperia X owners participating in the Concept program to prepare for other possible bugs in the software. Aside from the aforementioned new features, the new software package also changes the setup wizard for the Sony Xperia X that will now only work when Wi-Fi is available, though the manufacturer thinks only a small number of users who constantly use this feature will be affected by the change.
For those unfamiliar with Sony’s Xperia X Concept for Android, the Concept initiative, which was launched in 2015, allows users to get a sneak peek of the newest software features Sony will add to its smartphone lineup. Akin to the beta programs of other software manufacturers, Sony’s Xperia X Concept program allows users to provide feedback to Sony, aiding the smartphone manufacturer in improving the software features before it is released to a wider audience. However, the Sony Xperia X Concept program is only available in Europe, specifically to owners of the European single-SIM variant of Sony Xperia X with the model number F5121.
The Sony Xperia X is one of the smartphones released by Sony last year and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 chip featuring the Adreno 510 GPU. The smartphone has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, though the storage can be expanded using a microSD card. The Sony Xperia X has a 5-inch 1080p display and a 2,620mAh battery. Sony also equipped its Xperia X with a 23-megapixel rear camera, which has predictive autofocus and FullHD video recording capabilities, as well as a 13-megapixel front-facing camera.
