Nest’s new Cam IQ only alerts you when it’s important, having the ability to tell the difference between when a person is detected by the motion sensors and when your cat simply happens to walk by. Nest has officially announced the new camera today, expanding their lineup of smart home products and giving consumers a new option for an indoor security camera. More than just being able to differentiate between humans and animals though, the Nest Cam IQ can also track people as they move and keep them in the frame while zooming in so people are able to get more detail. For example, if you know the person who’s being sensed by the camera but aren’t sure if it is who you think it is, zooming in can give you a better look at the person in the frame so you can determine if it’s important or not.
Nest has made the camera even more powerful by giving it intelligent learning abilities that allow it to learn the faces of family members and friends over time. This allows it to not only differentiate between humans and pets, but also between familiar faces and strangers so you aren’t always getting alerts for family or friends. On top of that, it has intelligent audio alerts too so when it can’t see anything in the frame it can send alerts based on what it hears. Nest says the camera will only send alerts when it senses a person and receiving alerts is available to consumers without a subscription. In addition to receiving alerts anytime the camera senses a person the Nest Cam IQ also allows for 24/7 surveillance of your home and stores recordings in the cloud so you can always go back and view footage if you need to.
The Nest Cam IQ was rumored not to long ago but at the time it wasn’t known what the name of the camera was, just that it would have 4K. That said, the Nest Cam IQ doesn’t actually record video in 4K but it does have a 4K image sensor with 8-megapixel quality and using that sensor in combination with 12x digital zoom and HDR, the camera is able to provide more detail in the recordings than you would normally see from a standard Nest Cam. As mentioned before when the camera was still rumored, it comes with Night Vision so it can still capture footage when it’s dark, and it has HD Talk and Listen capabilities for two-way communication that Nest says is seven times more powerful than the original Nest Cam. Security on the Nest Cam IQ is enhanced too, providing 128-bit AES encryption with a TLS/SSL connection to keep your recordings secure, this way you can be assured that only you have access to what the camera sees and records. The Nest Cam IQ is already available for pre-order at Nest’s website in the U.S. and will be available for $299, or it can be picked up in a two-pack for $498. It will also be launching in the UK and Republic of Ireland for £299, as well as France, the Netherlands, and Belgium at €349 with pre-orders being live at Nest’s website for those regions as well. In addition, Nest will be launching it with pre-orders available on June 13th in Spain, Germany, Italy, and Austria, and prices should be the same here as the above listed EU pricing.
