New Actions On Google Challenge Offers Cash Prizes To Devs

Google has announced the Actions on Google Developer Challenge designed with a goal of encouraging developers to come up with new and unique Google Assistant actions. The challenge is open to any developer who is or might be interested in expanding their app’s functionality to the Google Assistant. While the Actions on Google platform was announced last year, this challenge is a way to motivate devs to get started with building actions that will work with more devices compatible with the Google Assistant including those powered by Android and iOS.

Developers interested in participating in the challenge should note that their app must get approved by Google by August 31. There are no limits on the number of times you can submit your app for approval as long as you do it within the deadline. It is also worth mentioning that yours must be a new app and you cannot enter the challenge multiple times with the same app. You can participate either as an individual or a team of up to three members, Google said. The Alphabet-owned company is also allowing each contestant to submit up to three apps as long as their submissions are “sufficiently differentiated experiences.” After the deadline, Google Assistant team members will start judging each valid entry on the basis of “creativity, relevance, quality, and usage.” The team will get in touch with all winners in the final quarter of the year and each participant is eligible to win in multiple categories.

Like with many other Google’s developer challenges, there are different prizes to be won. The top prize for the challenge comprises a visit to Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, and Google I/O 2018 tickets along with $10,000 in prize money. As for the second and third spot, winners will get $7,500 and $5,000, respectively, as well as one Google Home unit each. Other prizes are spread across 13 categories including the Best app by students, Best sound effects, Best API.AI app, Best Converse.AI app, and Best voice interaction. The challenge is open to participants outside of the United States, but with some limitations.
