The OnePlus 5 will be “the thinnest flagship phone,” according to the company’s co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Pete Lau. Lau recently took to Chinese social media website Weibo to tout how the Shenzhen, Guangdong-based consumer electronics manufacturer managed to produce to thinnest premium handset on the market without affecting the overall user experience of the device, indicating that the OnePlus 5 won’t heat up faster, drain more quickly, or be slower than its predecessor while simultaneously shipping in a significantly thinner case.
It’s currently unclear whether the company’s top executive was comparing the upcoming device with all flagships that are presently available on the market or just those manufactured by OnePlus, but he definitely indicated that the handset will be thinner than 7.35mm, which is how thick the OnePlus 3T is. For added context, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Apple iPhone 7 are 8mm and 7.1mm thick, respectively. A thin case won’t be the only selling point of the upcoming OnePlus-made device as the smartphone is said to feature a dual camera setup and recording software developed by well-known imaging company DxO Labs, in addition to shipping with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, as OnePlus recently confirmed. The Chinese original equipment manufacturer (OEM) has reportedly equipped the OnePlus 5 with as much as 8GB of RAM and will be looking to ship the device with Android 7.1.1 Nougat and its own OxygenOS. According to recent reports, the smartphone will be offered in two variants boasting 64GB and 128GB of internal flash memory, respectively, neither one of which is likely to sport a microSD card slot. There have so far been conflicting reports on whether the company will upgrade the Full HD display panel of the OnePlus 3T with its upcoming flagship and the same goes for the device’s front-facing camera.
According to a recent leak, the OnePlus 5 will be officially launched on June 15 and the device is scheduled to hit the market shortly after. The Chinese tech giant already started preparing for the release of its next smartphone by discontinuing the OnePlus 3T in most markets and is expected to share more teasers related to the OnePlus 5 in the coming days.
