Aside from the Snapdragon 660, Qualcomm will reveal two more Snapdragon SoCs on May 9, industry insider Roland Quandt claims. The two new SoCs will be named Snapdragon 630 and Snapdragon 635, other reports indicate, and these SoCs are rumored to replace the popular and capable Snapdragon 625 which is usually found in mid-range Android smartphones and tablets. There is not much new information about the SoCs provided by recent leaks but it is speculated that the two pieces of silicon may be similar in terms of performance.
According to a previous leak from Chinese social media site Weibo, the Snapdragon 630 and Snapdragon 635 SoCs will share many hardware features with each other. The two chipsets will both be powered by an octa-core ARM Cortex A53 processor, with frequencies ranging from 2.0GHz to 2.5GHz. For the graphics, the two SoCs will likely have the Adreno 506 GPU, the same graphics processor found in the Snapdragon 625. The SoCs will also ship with support for LPDDR3 RAM and will likely include a 4G LTE Category 7 Modem, which is capable of reaching 300Mbps download and 100Mbps upload speeds. While most of these leaked specs are comparable with those found in the Snapdragon 625, the upcoming chipsets are still expected to be an improvement over the older variant of Qualcomm’s mid-range piece of silicon.
The Snapdragon 630 and the Snapdragon 635 processors are expected to be used in mid-range smartphones, similar to their predecessor that was used in smartphones like the ASUS Zenfone 3, Moto Z Play, Xiaomi Redmi 4, and the ZTE Blade V8 Pro. It is expected that the new Snapdragon processors will be announced at an event on May 9 in China, where many manufacturers using Qualcomm’s midrange chipsets are based. Aside from the Snapdragon 630 and the Snapdragon 635, a new premium mid-range SoC is also expected to be announced on that event, the Snapdragon 660, which will likely replace another popular chipset, the Snapdragon 652. It is rumored that the Snapdragon 660, and possibly the Snapdragon 630 and Snapdragon 635, will start hitting the market by September. In the meantime, there’s not much to do but wait for the San Diego-based chipmaker to unveil its latest mid-range product lineup.
