The latest report from Strategy Analytics claims that Samsung and LG sell the most Android smartphones in the United States. While Apple still leads the list of the top 10 smartphone models sold in the United States with its iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Samsung and LG were able to claim certain spots in the top 10 list. Among the best selling smartphones from Samsung in the first quarter are its 2016 flagships, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. The two flagships are accompanied by the Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) in the top 10 list, which further proves how popular the mid-range device is around the world. Meanwhile, LG also secured a spot in the best-selling smartphone list, with its LG V20 being popular among US buyers.
The US smartphone market is not the largest in terms of sales volume, but it is still a very important market for any smartphone manufacturer. Successfully penetrating the US market will be a big boost to any manufacturer, as it could result to a substantial revenue growth for a device maker. However, the US market is relatively hard to penetrate especially for newcomers, as the smartphone sales are consolidated to a very small number of players. According to Strategy Analytics, roughly three-quarters of the US smartphone sales in the fourth quarter of last year were held by Apple, Samsung, and LG. The report also highlighted the limited impact of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 debacle had on its manufacturer, with the analytics firm expecting the company to rebound with the launch of its newest flagships, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus.
The second quarter of this year will be an interesting one for the smartphone manufacturers in the US market. In the second quarter, industry watchers will see how much of an impact the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus will have on Samsung’s market share and bottom line. It will also be interesting if the LG G6 will be able to sustain the record market share currently held by LG, which was boosted by the sales of the LG V20 and the manufacturer’s mid-range offerings in the X and K series.
